Botany, Herbal Medicine Making, Wild Crafting, and Plant Identification

This course will teach you how to identify, harvest, grow, and create medicine with local edible and medicinal plants. Combined with understanding biology topics of genetics, epigenetics, phylogeny, and photosynthesis, students will learn which medicine making techniques to use with which plant phytochemicals, as well as why and how these phytochemicals are medicinal. Students will learn to make herbal oils, tinctures, salves, vinegars, teas, and electuaries, how to start medicinal herb seeds, and how to make an herbarium with locally harvested plants. Students will also learn the basics of FDA compliance for selling herbal products. The missing link to nutrition!

Foundations of Herbalism

Foundations in Herbalism is a comprehensive, advanced training program designed for holistic health professionals who want to deepen their clinical use of herbs. The course is a deep dive into herbal formulation, organ system assessment through an herbal lens, and hands-on herbal medicine making.

Students will explore the history of traditional herbalism through a diagnostic perspective and gain the skills to match herbs to the bio individual physiology of their clients. The curriculum covers how to make and dose a wide variety of herbal preparations, including powders, honeys, teas, herb-infused oils, tinctures (both simple and advanced), vinegars, nourishing infusions, plasters, salves, and poultices.

Participants will also be guided through a full intake and assessment process to create bespoke herbal formulas for four client case studies. The course is taught by a national board-registered clinical herbalist and nutritionist.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the program, students will be able to:
  • Understand herbal dosage guidelines and herbal safety principles
  • Create custom herbal formulations for four mock client case studies
  • Conduct herbal assessments of organ systems
  • Prepare a wide variety of herbal preparations using traditional and modern techniques
  • Apply advanced herbal biochemistry to client protocol development
  • Confidently conduct intakes and assessments to guide clinical decision-making
